Brewfest ram racing guide for Horde (updated 2024)

During Brewfest you can get Brewfest prize tokens by participating in the ram racing daily quest in Durotar. Here are some tips, and the images below show the route I use. I also made a video which you can find here: Eesu's Brewfest ram racing guide, part 2: the race. Riding like this you can get 38 tokens in one daily quest, though it's not easy.

  Preparations:

Before starting, turn your pvp off and get yourself sober. Make sure you have room in your bags for the quest item. You can practise the course and especially passing the boxes (images 4 and 5) on a regular mount. Sometimes the boxes get you stuck. If you find it hard to get past those, you can run around the fence (riding a bit further straight in image 3, and going around the fence from the left side. See also image 16). Riding around the fence takes a little longer and you can't get 38 tokens in one race using that route.

One thing you want to do before starting is leave your skeleton at the other end to mark the turning point. Of course to leave a skeleton you'll have to commit suicide. If you have access to flying mounts this will be easy. You can also kill yourself by getting naked and letting those nearby boars attack you (getting naked and gearing up is fast if you use the equipment manager on your character sheet). Note that if you die, and only then turn your War Mode off, you won't be able to see your skeleton after 5 minutes. You can use the graphic of the terrain to leave your skeleton at exactly the same spot every time. Here's how I do it:

  1.  (click the picture to see it in full size)

If you look at the ground near the keg thrower you can see cracks. These shapes are distinguishable and repeating. I've circled two of the cracks in the middle of the road where the fence starts. These are the two cracks I use to always find the right spot.

  2.

Here are the same two cracks from another angle. If you stand at exactly where my tauren is standing in this picture (I repeat: not where the circle is but where he's standing) and you turn your character to face the keg thrower, and then you die, the turning point will be at the hip bone of your tauren skeleton. I've also made a video of how I set my skeleton, here: Eesu's Brewfest ram racing guide, part 1: setting my skeleton.

If for some reason you don't want to kill yourself, you can use toys that stick around for a long time and place one of those at the turning point (even the campfire is useful for 5 minutes). Or if you can get into a raid group, the colorful markers are great.

If you have an old computer and slow internet (like I used to have) then the best time to race is when there are only few other players around (early mornings) as you may experience lag during rush hours. The ram timer keeps steadily ticking however, so any lag will only be harmful to you. Before starting, you may want to turn your /dnd on (do not disturb) and write down how many Brewfest prize tokens you've already got. You may also want to watch the other riders for a while to see if you can spot a good rider. It feels sweet when you overtake him/her. I find it especially sweet when I /wave at him/her while doing so :) (You can create a macro for effortless waving). Once you start the race, keep your ram at full speed the whole time.

  The Race:

  3.

Start the race from as far away from the quest giver as possible and ride towards the direction that I'm facing in this screenshot. Turn right after the barrels (see the red arrow). Another good option on the first lap is to run a bit further straight and only turn right after the fence, since it will take you a couple of seconds to get to full speed.

  4.

Ride between the fences and jump through the boxes. (You can try to hit the box I've marked with small red "x", which usually lets you slide past them.)

  5.

Flying through the air! (the red arrow shows the direction you should take after landing)

  6.

After landing, turn slightly to the left. You can already see the first apple basket ahead. By visiting the apple baskets you will feed your ram and it can run at full speed. Keep lashing that whip! (You can drag the "whip/belt" icon from your bag into your action bar. However, be careful when starting the race, as using that whip/belt/reins on your action bar before you are fully mounted will dismount you and then you won't be able to do the quest that day. The first five "whips" should be done by clicking the "Giddy up!" icon that appears in the middle of the screen when you start the race.)

  7.

You can obtain the apples from buckets from a range of about 4 tauren steps. :) Blizzard tweaked the ram racing a few years back and while before you had to almost touch the bucket, you can now get the apples from further away. Get 'em and ride uphill towards the second apple basket.

  8.

You can wave at the duellists as you pass by them.

  9.

Jump here to cut the corner, though I'm not sure if that saves time.

  10.

There you can see the second apple basket. You only need to visit it once per run, on the way in (unless you make a mistake and don't get the keg on the first try, in which case you should visit the apple basket on the way back too). Again, you don't have to touch the apple basket and instead you can pass the upcoming banner and fence on the right hand side, as the arrow points. The arrow with a broken line is showing you the route back.

  11.

This is from how far away from the bucket you could get the apples back in 2021. Since 2022 you can get those from even further away. After the basket, go get the keg. This is an old screenshot and I've left a campfire to mark the turning point (the raid world markers are even better for this or some toys, like the Warning Sign that lasts for 60 minutes). If you haven't left any mark, you can check the turning point from the metal fence on the right. The turning point is on the middle of the road where the fence starts, indicated roughly by the green line. You don't need to get any closer to the keg thrower than that.

  12.

The turning point is where you'll save the most time compared to an average rider. This image shows the direction where my camera used to be pointed towards just before doing the turn, after the campfire had gone out. You can make instant turnarounds by pointing the camera to the other direction and then clicking both mouse buttons, but it's hard if you have to keep an eye on that fence.

  13.

Here's another old screenshot showing my camera angle just before doing the turn. The skeleton is on a different place than where I set it nowadays, but the small red x in the picture is at the optimal point of doing the turn compared to the terrain graphics and the fence. In this screenshot you can also see the whip/reigns icon on my actionbar, key 1.

  14.

When you start to head back you should immediately see the keg appear on your character's back (not seen in this image). There is also a sound effect when receiving the item. The animation of receiving the keg will happen much later. If you turn back too early without getting the keg, you can forget about getting any kind of high score run that time (if you care about that sort of thing).

  15.

From here on you can go back the same way you came in.

  16.

If you haven't made any big mistakes, you should be able to make it back to this first apple basket in time. From here, the fastest way is to head back to the boxes and ride between them. Again, there's a risk of getting stuck, and riding between the boxes puts you in a position where you would soon have to do a sharp 180 degree turn, so I drew the yellow arrow to show the easier and slower way.

  17.

Doing this guide, I'm trying to remember the race from a year back. This picture should show the aim I was using to get past the crates.

  18.

And here we are, back at the start. You need to ride to the green line to be close enough to the quest giver to throw him the keg. Then, repeat from image 4. In the past years, you had to ride all the way to the row of barrels and touch it, but now you can throw the keg from much further away.

  19.

In 2022 I could no longer see the skeletons of my other characters, so I can only use one skeleton; the one on the other end. Thus I had to find a way other than a skeleton to mark the turning point on this end. If you look at the graphics on the terrain in this picture, you can see there are darker areas which I've circled. The turning point is right after the smaller patch of dark.

While on the quest, there's a buff icon that tells you how long you can still use the ram. When the race starts you have 5 minutes to ride and each time you bring back a keg you'll get 30 seconds more. A perfect run takes about 43 seconds, so if you have less than 10 seconds to go when you start a new keg run, then you know you won't be able to make it back in time. You can still use that last run to test the turning points or the apples, just to see from how far away you can get those. A race with little mistakes takes about 14 minutes.

My record is getting 38 tokens in one race and I've never got even close to 40. 40 might be theoretically possible, if you could program a computer to make the perfect turns (= tool-assisted speedrun). According to some Youtube videos, Alliance players can get as many as 44 tokens with one daily quest and this is something I'm going to test next year. :) If you do the ram racing quest every day plus a bit more Brewfest activity you can easily get a little over 600 Brewfest prize tokens by the end of the event. So, if you're going to buy those heirloom upgrades you'll be able to choose between one that costs 500 or two that cost 300.

As you know, Blizzard makes changes to their games every now and then, so maybe next year you can get the apples or the keg from even further away. And now, to quote a former Formula 1 driver Mika Salo, the main thing is not to win but to humiliate others. Happy overtaking! :)
